Gul: Raid on UN HQ Does Not Affect Our Decision

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said that the bomb raid on UN Headquarters in Baghdad would not affect the decision of Turkey to send troops.

Gul said that these were separate issues and Turkey was spending efforts towards providing normalization in Iraq. Gul stressed that the raid of Tuesday would contribute to instability in Iraq. Gul said, “It is important that Iraq should start to be governed by Iraqis, the Constitution should be established, and elections should be held. No doubt time is needed for that. However the shorter this time period, the better it will be for Turkey, Iraq, and the region. We, as Turkey, spend efforts to shorten this period and ensure normalization in Iraq.”

Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said that the issue of sending troops to Iraq would be elaborately tackled in the Cabinet meeting on Monday. Before the Cabinet, the National Security Board (MGK) will tackle the issue on Friday. Preparations, which started after the summit meeting in Cankaya (Presidential) Kiosk and the analysis of the reply to the questionnaire sent to U.S. will be tackled in the meeting.
