Ankara DGM had sentenced Ocalan to capital punishment on the basis of the article Turkish Penal Law on treachery. However since capital punishment was abolished, except for the times of war and close threat of war, the court converted the sentence of Ocalan into aggravated lifetime imprisonment. The lawyers of Ocalan objected to the decision. The court regarded this objection as an appeal and transferred the case to the Appeals Court. The Appeals Court sent the case to Ankara DGM and with the decision of the Court the procedure was completed. Abdullah Ocalan will be imprisoned in Imrali for the rest of his life.
