“The famous 5th article of NATO agreement starts by saying “an attack against any of the allies is considered as an attack against all allies.” The basic philosophy of NATO lies in this article. What if that attack comes from another ally… There is no regulation in the text on this issue… Therefore American officials became the inventors of that situation that was not foreseen in the NATO Convention by detaining Turkish soldiers in Suleymaniye. What is more, American commanders organizing this attack did not refrain from putting sacks on heads of Turkish soldiers as if they were Taleban members.
“In this incident, one of those whose head was put in a sack, is Turkey. The one whose pride was harmed is the Turkish public. What is more, it is impossible to make this forgotten… This attitude of U.S. can also be explained by carelessness.
“In fact, this incident in Suleymaniye is a result of the problematic view of the U.S. after the rejection of March 1 permit.
“…At this point the best thing to do is to leave the decision to the U.S., about how she wants to continue with her relations with Turkey. The first step in this framework is to give up using the “strategic partnership” concept in defining Turco-American relations. These relations should have a rest for a while…and should be re-defined in the future.
“…The most meaningful step that can be taken by the government is to postpone the visit of Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul to Washington which was expected to take place at the end of July.”
