Like the Johnson Letter

The fact that 11 Turkish soldiers were detained in Northern Iraq and taken to Baghdad, upset relations between Turkey and the U.S. like what Johnson Letter did in 1964.

From rightists to leftists, all sections of the Turkish society reacted to the incident. The Turkish press that is usually divided on a lot of issues, used similar headlines and comments. Politicians criticized Americans heavily.

A New World Will Be Built

The incident affected Turco-American relations like what Johnson Letter did in 1964. In his letter then, Johnson wrote that Turkey could not use American weapons in Cyprus and then-prime minister Ismet Inonu had responded by saying , “A new world will then be built and Turkey will take its place there!” (These words of Inonu, a veteran of the War of Independence and the second man of the Republic after Ataturk, are always remembered and quoted for a long time by Turks, as a symbol of the independent and courageous spirit of the Turkish nation.)

Foreign Ministry Representative Hidayet Eris who is in the Turkish mission carrying out observations in the aftermath of the raid, said that "The military satellite system in the bureau was destroyed. About 30 M-16 and AK-47 type weapons, 106 thousand dollars is the steel safe, 4 vehicles and wireless, have dissapeared."
